This year, the United States is set to overtake Russia in the production of oil and natural gas. Estimates released by the Energy Information Administration say that liquids produced in the U.S. will average 11 million barrels per day in 2014 versus 10.86 million in Russia.

The rise to the top is fueled by new drilling techniques such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracking. Experts in North Dakota say these predictions will change America's place on the global
energy map.

"Because of the shale rock right here in North Dakota, the world is starting to look at oil differently. And, of course, America is starting to look at oil differently. This is home grown American oil, and we can begin telling countries like Russia, You go ahead and keep your oil. We have our own right here,'" says North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness.

Last year, the EIA forecast America could out produce Saudi Arabia by 2020, and become energy independent ten years later.
